How To Get Scrap Business Referrals

The scrap metal game is getting tough. Everybody knows the value of scrap.  People are even saving up scrap pennies! So what can you do to find more business? Make it personal!

People love to hire those that are recommended by their friends. Especially for simple things like picking up some scrap metal. So what can you do as a business to open yourself up to possible referrals?

Here are some simple ideas:

1. Be friendly, knowledgable, and tell the truth; Always.

The first part of being successful is having a sustainable business model. Yes, being a real jerk may seem like it works, but it will not, and cannot, work in the long term. (See 2007 financial crisis.) The key to being a relentless and powerful entrepreneur, is to actually be a knowledgable and scrupulous businessman.  Please consider making your business a green business

2. If something is not worth your time, or can easily be taken care of by a casual homeowner, explain to them what to do! Send them a few business cards later on in the week, and they will think highly of you.

To get respect, you must give respect. Those that demand respect, but give none, will be lost.

With that in mind, let me tell you a story. About 5 years ago, I was having a very hard time with my personal PC. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. It just started shutting down without warning. I was 100% certain that it was software related, and therefore never bothered to take it apart. I called around to several repair shops, and they told me to bring it in. They all quoted at least $25 fees just for bringing it in.

But, one if the guys I called had an entirely different attitude. He very quickly diagnosed the problem, saying that my CPU was overheating. He said, "probably because of dirt build up. " He said I could bring it in and he could clean the thing up, or he said "Just take a vacuum cleaner, and gently collect all dust around the CPU."

I was amazed. When I opened the case, there was a giant wad of dust all over CPU. I cleaned it up and it worked fine. The next year when I installed all new computers in my shop office, I hired that guy to do the installation and servicing to everything, and he has been my go-to guy whenever I need any work done. And yes, I recommend him whenever possible.

3. Hold promotions! When somebody contacts you, tell them about a recent promotion!

Promotions are not limited to car dealerships and supermarkets. You can hold a promotion too! This means putting things like movie tickets, or gift cards up for grabs for your customers. Maybe hold a lotto at the end of the month to see who gets the prizes, ect. Then, when you go to deliver the prizes, possibly have a little chat and offer the person some business cards, ect.

The more that your customer likes you, the more they will want to sell you to their friends later.

4. Never burn bridges.

When you are looking to win the future support of your customers, the last thing you want to do is create a future enemy. These will be the people who go out of their way to slander and destroy you!  This advice can be expanded into your daily life as well. I have made this mistake before, and it only causes problems for you in the future.

5. Discuss referrals with your customer, and always leave business cards.

The business cards are a must have! Be sure you have plenty and hand them out to everybody. Upon closing a job, give your customer a business card, and ask them to refer you to other people, friends, ect.  This type of professionalism is respected and appreciated.

The real reason you want referrals, is because you want more work. Make sure you get your business strategy and have a easily recognizable name. These things, along with dedication and hard work, will put your business at the top!
