I have, as a scrapper, very strong feelings about metal theft. In my mind, its one of the worst forms of thievery.
Metal theft is when somebody steals any type of metal, to sell for its scrap value to a scrap yard. An example would be somebody cutting the water meter off of your house, and then selling it to a scrap yard for $20 or $30 for its copper and brass value.
In the summer of '07, metal prices were sky high, and the high school nearest my house was installing new bleachers at their football stadium. They were made mostly of aluminum, and the total cost of construction was $15,000. One night, a week after the construction of these bleachers, someone stole all of the bleachers. The article in the paper said they had a little more than half a ton of aluminum, or about $2000 in scrap. The school was left without bleachers, and had to pay again to have them replaced.
I wish I could describe the type of feeling I get in my gut when I think about what kind of person would do such a thing. And it happens all the time, especially recently, because scrap has been going up constantly the past year. What makes a metal thief that much worse is the destruction inherent in their crime. These types of criminals take something that has so much inherit value, and take away all its potential. Metal theft is the opposite of innovation, and it is the most dishonorable type of thievery.

no kidding, that's why I stick to things others would think of as trash.
